Yeah, gotta watch out for those photographers, huh?

If it was me, I would’ve banned pressure cookers, but what do I know?

absolutely ridiculous. There isn’t any shot that any prosumer could take from the grandstands that would be salable, versus track-level shots being taken by photographers shooting off 300mm 2.8 monster glass. Many sports venues have gotten to the point where they just don’t even care if fans bring in cameras because they understand there’s absolutely no chance a fan’s shots are going to compete with professional shots.

Who knew camcorders were favorite weapons of terrorists?

But bringing in your 9mm glock is just fine.

This goes hand in hand with the craziness I experienced last weekend trying to get into the Giants game in SF. Waiting hours on line to get bags checked and wanded, only to find a cursory inspection and no wanding.

They want to reduce the amount of stuff security has to check, and I’m okay with that as a general proposition, but camera gear isn’t exactly terrorism material*. It’s an attempt for the venue to try and control imagery that can be sold or valued. If they want to reduce the amount of gear, they could restrict the camera equipment to just the body and an attached lens - no swapping out (like if someone brought a wide angle and super telephoto and switched between the two, or brought two separate bodies with lenses).

Never mind that the overwhelming majority of salable images will come from the professionals with the $10k lenses (think EF 800mm
f/5.6L IS USM - MSRP of $14k or the EF 400mm f/2.8 for $12k) and who are up on the rail or on the infield, but a casual photographer or hobbyist with good lenses will want to take them to a sporting event to get the best shots they can.

* There is always the possibility that LEOs got wind of a plot involving weapons/explosives that are supposed to look like camera gear, but I find that implausible.

It’s just another hassle in the security theater game.

They had something like that at an outdoor concert here in Nashville last year, you couldn’t bring in what they considered a “Pro” camera. It’s a stupid rule that has nothing to do with security, but more to protect the official event photogs and prevent somebody from videoing the concert.

Petty little rules put in place by petty little people. I need to talk to an old friend of mine that used to be an editor for a paper, see if he can maybe get me a “Press Pass”. (of course, if I were the type that rebelled against stupid petty regulations, I bet I could jimmy up one that looks 100% legit, and just make sure it’s from a paper in a town a bit down the road, so they probably haven’t seen one.

Hi, Yea I’m Steve, I’m with the Littletown General Flyer.

Derby policy has changed slowly over the years. They raised the infield ticket price sharply in an attempt to keep out the undesirables. They’ve banned coolers, cans, glass bottles etc., to keep down public drunkenness (as if) and safety hazards, so the backpack rule is no surprise. Coincidentally, this policy forces the infield crowd to pay exorbitant prices for drinks (including watered-down mint juleps) sold at the Downs. Now, I wonder how they’re going to deal with all the rich folks, including celebrities, who bring their $10,000 camera kits into the stands and boxes.

Who will give in first, Churchill Downs or the movers and shakers going to the Derby?

Here’s the official do’s and don’ts list kentuckyderby.com

Yes, ‘cause god knows somebody shooting with a Tamron 70-300mm zoom, that starts at 3.5 and works up to 5.6, is going to be endangering profits from pros who are probably on the freaking stage with 10k worth of gear.

The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved

Hilarious article by H.S. Thompson for those who haven’t read it yet.

BTW I went to Louisville last weekend for “Thunder over Louisville”. A day long festival signifying the opening of the Kentucky Derby with aerial acrobatics topped off with a snazzy fireworks display. I guess the event had a lot of military aircraft in the past, but the sequester splashed cold water on that and the promoters had to scramble for private aircraft to fill the massive void. Which they did.
