Fear of Sen. Franken’s intelligence is why so many conservatives tried to ridicule him for his work in the entertainment industry. They did everything they could to keep him from winning the Senate seat. We need well-informed people in Congress like Sen. Franken who are willing to confront industry reps who create highly-biased studies that are meant to sway public opinion in favor of corporations. This reminds me of the Reinhart/Rogoff research report that turned out to be filled with critical errors that caused the report’s results to favor conservative ideology.

It’s important to note that the report is looking at insurance claims costs, and not insurance premium costs.

In other words, when the ACA fully kicks in, an additional 14 million people will be able to purchase health insurance in the individual, non-group market. From the report:

“Under the ACA, the individual non-group market will grow 115 percent, from 11.9 million to 25.6 million lives; 80 percent of that enrollment will be in the Exchanges”

The impact of “high risk pool members, employers dropping group coverage, and increased morbidity from selection by those currently uninsured who now purchase coverage” will cause insurers to pay out more in claims that they do now.

Insurance premiums will be subject to what’s called Rate Review: if an insurer tries to raise rates by 10% or more, the review process kicks in, and state regulators will have the authority to deny the increase if it’s determined to be excessive or unreasonable.

Insurance companies got the health care law they wanted, and they’re complaining worse than the employers who are trying to squirm out of an obligation they (employers) could have bypassed altogether had they supported single-payer in the first place.
