She didn’t deserve that sort of commentary, and she didn’t do anything wrong. It’s good to see that the guy who lead the attacks on her got suspended and his predecessor who joined in retracted his words and apologized, since it means that they didn’t get away with it. Counter a political proposal on the merits, not with personal attacks. On those merits, however, she is wrong and Bernalillo County made a mistake.

Cornelius also hinted that she was a prostitute…suggesting she was using her shoes by walking along a street known for hookers in Albuquerque.

Great guy.

Translation of Steve Kush apology; “Now that I think about it, I was wrong to publicly say what I say in private. My bad.”

Yeah, living wages are a big mistake. Fuck the poor, right? Thanks, Ayn Rand.

What a load of shit.

On what merits exactly DF what is inherently wrong about the idea of wanting to make enough money that you can pay all your bills and save some for the future?

I think I disagree with this.

At some fundamental level I think “living wage” is simply a well crafted rhetorical tool. It’s intended to evoke an emotional response but isn’t well defined in terms of economics.

Yes & no. On one hand, the average wage has fallen enough to kill the “American dream.” We do need for more people to earn enough money to get their heads above the poverty threshold. Working full-time and earning little more than the current minimal wage is bulls***.

On the other hand, income is only part of the picture. There is also the question of rising living costs. There are understandable (or at least relatively tolerable) increases such as inflation and rising fuel costs. But there have also been outright predatory cost increases such as sub-prime lending payments and hospitals engaged in unfettered price-gouging, just to name two of the more high-profile examples.

Both sides of the equation have been annihilating the middle class. We can’t fix our problems by only addressing one of them. Then again, we shouldn’t fault a grassroots movement for focusing on one thing at a time. The movements that go after everything at once tend to meander and waste momentum until they eventually fizzle out. **coughoccupycough**
