As an Adobe user for the past 11 years, THIS SUCKS. Does this mean they will no longer support any more standalone installations?

re: #1 Vicious Babushka

They will support up to version six I think, but not after — and they will release bug fixes etc. but there won’t be feature additions, etc. I love the idea, but I hate the price. I have to save up to buy bits of Adobe and their subscription is out of my reach.

I’ve been meaning to buy Version 6 (I have 5.5 now), can I still get it?

re: #3 Vicious Babushka

Yes you can if you can find it and they will still support it, there’s even a reduced price for the subscription if you opt to go CC later. (details in the article if you click out) I will probably end up later dumping everything but lightroom and doing the annual cloud subscription, but that’s a couple years off since I just bought lightroom 4 not long ago.

I’ve been using Dreamweaver and Photoshop for my website since 2005. I could go to Visual Studio for the web dev but I would still need Photoshop.

I will just have to bite the bullet, upgrade to 6 and then take the subscription. There is a discount in the subscription for registered users of CS6.

It’s all Download now? You can’t buy it on disc? All my previous collections are on disc.

Adobe is still offering the upgrade for $375, I’ll have to call them and see if they will send the media, I’d even pay extra to have backup media.

I’m betting you can buy it in a box as well, I just assumed you would want download.

What’s the advantage of download? What if I buy a new computer or I have to reinstall? I’m old school like that, I like to have the media and the serial number, although I can retrieve the SN from my Adobe account.

re: #10 Vicious Babushka

The advantage isn’t to you. It’s to Adobe in controlling the distribution so that they can reduce unlicensed copies from floating around (or hacked copies). But if the software is part of their cloud computing method (something MSFT is also doing with Office), then they can update and fix problems more quickly, integrate them into their software suites better, and create a more stable product over time.

But it also assumes that you’re going to have high speed net access - which isn’t always a given. Some parts of the country don’t have high speed access (I’m talking 20mbs or more for consumer access), or lave limited bandwith.

Those folks would be in trouble…

My experience with Creative Cloud has been excellent. I can install on as many computers as I want, and I can have two authorized at the same time. I got the discounted $30 a month plan and I could not be happier.

13 dragonath  Tue, May 7, 2013 7:44:12am

It won’t be thrilling when it finally goes to $50 bucks. They will, hopefully, offer different plans like the way they do with with Design Premium, etc. It’s another monthly payment on top of insurance, rent, and other expenses…

Not everybody is a wealthy person with a constant income stream- and I’m wondering how this will play out for people who don’t have a modern internet connection (they exist!).

Even my retail copy of CS5.5 hectors the user about updates.

It’s reeeeal nice to have a lump of your wasted space and files you can’t access even for a day or two.

Cloud? Never. Local CPU, Local memory, Local Storage only for me. I would not hand Adobe, MS or Amazon the keys to my house; why should I hand them the keys to my computer and my data? Nope.

Good thing I have a copy of CS2 that runs fine under WINE. I won’t be upgrading it ever it appears.

re: #13 dragonath

The programs themselves and your files are not kept “on the cloud”. They are local and they stay that way. The programs are downloaded and installed into your system. After that and the initial authorization you can pull the plug on the internet and work as you wish.

A person without fast internet would just have to wait out the long download/install or go somewhere once to get started.

16 dragonath  Tue, May 7, 2013 7:54:19am

My guess is Adobe is going to come up with a new file format for the Creative Cloud, like they did on Indesign CS6 (.indd vs .idml). Bet on it.

My connection before going to something reliable was… uh… even 60kb per second with DSL. With constant outages. I don’t think this is as much of an option for much of us as you think it is.

Keep in mind this is the east coast where the telephony infrastructure probably hasn’t been upgraded since 1930.

I have the discounted plan too, but I’m not sure how happy I’m going to be when it goes back to the normal $50/month.

I know I can get PS alone for $20/month, but when you add in Lightroom and Illustrator it pretty much becomes a wash.

BTW, does anyone know if Lightroom will still be available as a non-Cloud program once version 5 comes out?

You download the software from the Cloud, but it installs on your computer just like CS2 does. The difference is Adobe’s phone home license check once a month.

I can count on 1… actually, 0 fingers the number of people I know who actually shelled out money for Photoshop. They priced themselves out of the market years ago. That $700 is $700 that can go towards a really good Wacom.

Maybe this will finally get a few alternatives out there.

I know most of the artistic types I know of went to Paint Tool Sai for basic sketching and drawing, with some using Manga / Comic Studio. And Japan has a rather frightening number of programs they’re making to replace Photoshop — Sai being the first and most important, but Clip Studio Paint has some really amazing features, to boot.

For all digital media I save to CD/dvd, back up to a SAN unit, put a copy on a SD card or USB stick if I can fit it, and keep it in the cloud.

Works great if you have the storage space (I’ve kept most of my frankenputers over time and added drives to them to get about 5TB of storage)

Just got Lightroom 4.4 for 65 bucks from some tech.com download site (which actually takes you to the Adobe site for the download) and for me, that’s gonna be the last Adobe upgrade, ‘cause even as a professor, I can’t really afford the student/teacher monthly rate for what I use the system for. It’s mostly sprucing up my flickr stream, and CS4 works just fine for that. I thought Lightroom 4 might be a more convenient way to organize my stuff, and I guess time will tell.

I’ll see your 11 years and raise you 9.

Not a happy propeller head right now.

You’re not alone. The comments on the tech sites are running into the thousands, and are around 99% negative.

I guess I’ll take another look at Corel Photopaint, although I’m really going to miss Camera Raw, and I don’t know how a Lightroom/Photopaint workflow is going to work out.

re: #19 KiTA

I like Manga Studio- it’s a good program for inking. And on the Mac, there’s Pixelmator.

I think Adobe may have given up whatever grip they may have for future market share have for profits now. Not a terrible choice from the business end, but they end up treating their loyal customers the way a cable company does.

And who needs that.
