The La Brea tar pits are a fun diversion worth checking out. :)

Not quite directly in the LA/OC area, but going over to Catalina Island - and preferably staying a night - could be a lot of fun. It’s one of our favorite places down that way, although we typically go during the off-season. Lots of interesting stuff to see (I know some places run tours of the island) but also just a great place to stroll around town.

You can also go on board the Queen Mary (2?), which has been turned into a floating hotel in the harbor. We stayed there one night when the seas were too rough and the ferry over to Catalina was cancelled and had such a fun time.

Felipe’s in LA has great sandwiches and is an older, historic eatery. It’s not too far from Union Station, if you have any interest in train stations. Also reasonably close to the Mexican market area, which is worth a visit if you are nearby. I don’t know if I would advocate going just to see that, though.

And be prepared for horrible traffic everywhere.

Felipes! Yum! Also, the Original Pantry restaurant in downtown LA.
Museum of Natural History, the OLD Getty in Malibu, the New Getty in Westwood. Olvera Street. For San Diego you MUST go the the SD Zoo, it’s world class! The Wild Animal Park in SD, meh, not so much.
OK, so, if you haven’t been to Disney Land, with or without children, YOU MUST GO. It’s a whole long exhausting day, and you REALLY want to go on a weekday, to avoid crowds as much as possible! Newport Beach, check out the pier, and you should eat at the Crab Cooker, a locals favorite.
Check to see when the Miramar Air SHow is (SD) it’s an open base airshow, not expensive, but do splurge to be under a canopy for seating, it can be HOT!

Pass on Knotts Berry Farm.

Any Tall Ships festival is awesome!

What’s your transportation situation? How long can you stand to spend in a car?

just to say you’ve done it… surf in the morning (newport or huntington, probably want to start shortly after sunrise), ski in the afternoon (big bear or mt. baldy, both have snowmaking equipment on-site so their season lasts longer than the weather would seem to allow), and be in the desert (joshua tree) in time for sunset.

Kind of a long day, but I don’t think there’s anywhere else but SoCal you can do that.

Laguna Beach was always my favorite.

Trump’s Stolen Nuclear Documents: The Foundation for a “Nero Decree”? OK, in our darkest imaginings, we thought that this *might* be how unhinged, petty, vengeful & evil Trump was. One of the basic documents about America's nuclear arsenal is actually really, really out of date. As in, it relies ...
