I had never seen this speech before, wow.

Chaplins’s speech at the end of “The Great Dictator” ranks as one of the greatest monologues of all time, and perhaps the greatest in the history of cinema. At the very least, it is certainly the most moving and resonant monologue I’ve ever encountered.

Chaplin not only spends a large part of the film ruthlessly lampooning Hitler and other leading Nazis - as well as Mussolini - but in his closing monologue, Chaplin brilliantly utilizes Hitler’s own rhetorical style to make his impassioned plea for a better world.

“Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical: Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity; more than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost. To those who can hear me, I say - do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed - the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish.”

Powerful words, to put it mildly. And still true 73 years later.

Chaplin was an awesome entertainer. There isn’t much of his work that you can’t still watch today that isn’t more entertaining than much of what is being made today.

This is another good movie speech from Good Will Hunting.

That was a good one. Here’s one of the great ones, in my opinion:

Another great movie speech is Orson Welles as Clarence Darrow in Compulsion (1959)

Wow…. Just WOW!!! I’m going to have to make sure that goes in my perm. booklist collection.

I may just have to watch The Great Dictator today, hopefully it’s available on either Netflix streaming or Hulu.

Thumbs up for Charlie Chaplin. Thumbs down for Hans Zimmer.

Just from reading the headline, I knew it was going to be this speech. Because if it wasn’t, I was all set to complain!
