I saw this on Jimmy Colton’s blog, and all I can say is that it is utter bullshit. If people that take selfies fifty freaking times a day and post them on Instagram are professionals, then we are truly fucked.

She is so full of crap. There will always be a place for the highly skilled period. Petapixel did a piece about a guy that posts identical composition images done “crowd sourced” and then with his fine touch and the difference was stunning. BTW after considering going with Getty or some other firm, I’m staying independent. I have my jewelry & process niche, video and video production seems to be a bigger factor for me than stills for now.

Photos like this don’t come from anyone who can’t properly be termed professional.

It wasn’t artfully said, but in many ways, it’s true. There ARE professional photographers around, obviously, but I think what she was getting at is that I as an amateur can take almost any shot now that a pro can, without anyone being able to tell any difference. 40 years ago, even 20 years ago, professionals had their own darkrooms, and it was obvious looking at filmwork whether or not someone was a professional. Now, everything is digital, and I can take virtually any shot a pro can take with my gear and then process it through lightroom and photoshop until it is as good as pro work. Now, I don’t have the training that lets me shoot blindingly good portrait shots, as professional portrait photographers do, but then again, we’ve all seen any number of “professional” studios where portraits are shot against a monochromatic screen, with a leased medium-format camera on a tripod, and I can probably shoot ad hoc portraits in a park with a 35mm that would be more imaginative and interesting than what has generally been viewed as “professional.” so I kind of take the point.
