Church people are the base of the GOP. The exit polls show that Romney’s advantage over Obama with white people was entirely due to his overwhelming support from white evangelical and born-again Christians and Mormons; they basically split the rest of the white vote. This is the trap the GOP has caught itself in; its stridently theocratic base has captured the party, and nominates extremist politicians who everyone else finds repellant. I found the quote from Dick Morris at the end of the article fascinating:

Dick Morris, the controversial political consultant, warned at the conference that single women are turned off “massively” by the GOP’s position on abortion. But then he reassured his audience that the problem is “emphasis,” not policy.
“There is an answer to it, and it does not involve changing our position on abortion one iota,” he said. “What we need to say to the single white women in America is, ‘We want to repeal Roe vs. Wade but we know in 40 years it has not been overturned and with Obama appointing the judges it’s not likely to be. So we want to lead a coalition to reduce the number of abortions in the United States.’”

No, but they need to figure out the link between contraception and abortion. (Might ask a school nurse.) If they soften on BC, they lose the Catholic hierarchy and the harder-shell fundamentalists.
