From the article:

“Hillary’s no progressive,” Becker said. “She’s not terrible, but she’s not a progressive.”

No she isn’t a progressive, and she never was a progressive. Neither was her husband. Neither was Obama.

There are two realities the folks at Netroots Nation and other lefties will have to accept as facts of life before they have any chance of seeing their agenda implemented, let alone seriously talked about:

1. A progressive they can get really excited about stands little to no chance of winning the Democratic Party nomination. The Democrats decided in the wake of their electoral shellackings in the 80’s that in order to be relevant they would have to throw bones to the right, and the bones they throw are big ones.

2. Even if someone they could rally behind managed to win the nomination and the election, it is very likely this person would govern much the same way Obama has, and Bill Clinton before him - throwing big bones to the right, Two huge examples of this - Obama bailing on the public option, Clinton signing welfare reform.

Unlike Clinton, Obama was shrewd enough to realize this situation and managed to get a lot done in his first two years with a Democratic congress, particularly health care reform, even without a public option.

The thing is, a popular progressive (Howard Dean, Elizabeth Warren, to name two) would probably govern the same way. Why? Because they either accept the corporatist reality of American politics and try to get something done within that structure, or they stand firm on progressive principles and get nothing done. And what is most frustrating about progressives is that they will bail on the Democrats in light of this, leading to huge Republican waves in the midterm elections, which both Clinton and Obama experienced. Midterm waves for the out party are nothing new, but one reason the GOP did so well in 1994 and 2010 is because progressives stayed home.

The moral of the story is that if you want to change the way things are, you have to accept the way things are, and the way things are now is corporate domination of American politics, with the Democrats, in practical terms, representing only a watered down version. Still, a Democratic president and a Democratic congress can start to swing things back a little bit, albeit very sloooooowly, which is reason enough for progressives to get behind Hillary. But they have to be patient, and realize that many of their priorities may not get addressed right away, or even in the foreseeable future. But the best chance of that happening is to continue supporting the Dems, even if it means having to hold you nose now and again.

Because the alternative is more Michele Bachmann’s, Louie Gohmert’s, Allen West’s, Ted Cruz’s, Rand Paul’s, etc etc etc…

And that is simply the way it is.

The last person to win them over was probably Huey Long.

So no. Not gonna happen.
