Is that like the conservative version of “Friends of Dorothy”?

I feel pretty certain that Jon Voight was lurking around somewhere, kissing Scalia’s rear end and licking up the juices.

I am confused here. Are you upset that Scalia has personal opinions and is willing to speak about them in public, or are you upset that he did not take private money for it?

I am upset that he spoke to a non-partisan group, one whose views I find abhorrent, on the taxpayer’s dime.

Justices are supposed to at least pretend to be impartial.

Impartial in court, in terms of legal cases. No one is impartial in their personal life. I had no idea that SCOTUS judges give up their ability to speak where they choose to express personal opinions when they take the job.

Is this a rule we would apply to all judges at the high level or just the ones we don’t like? If a liberal judge speaks at a liberal or progressive event what would we make of RW outrage? Me, I’d dismiss it out of hand. Personal life is personal.

re: #9 Political Atheist

If a ‘liberal’ judge spoke to a group specifically set up for political purposes, as Friends of Abe is, I would oppose that too.

When Scalia’s expense report is examined it shows that most of the groups he spoke to are non-partisan. Speaking at law schools, universities and bar associations I have no problem with. They are, hopefully, discussing how the law is created, applied and enforced.

Friends of Abe is a political group. Their purpose is not to study the law but to support a particular political philosophy in gaining and keeping power.

That Scalia would speak to them, on the taxpayer’s dime, makes it appear that the judge may have been influenced not by his understanding of the law and the Constitution but by people whose interest is power.

Not a good thing in my opinion.
