Hellish way to go. They had to deploy their personal fire protection shelters.

I read about this last night—very sad—such a huge loss for the community. R.I.P.

Not just firefighters, they were Hot Shots.

In the United States, an interagency hotshot crew (IHC), or simply hotshot crew, is a Type 1[1][nb 1] handcrew of 20 firefighters specially trained in wildfire suppression tactics.[4] Hotshot crews are considered an elite group among wildland firefighters, due to their extensive training, high physical fitness standards, and ability to undertake difficult, dangerous, and stressful assignments.[5] They often respond to large, high-priority fires and are trained and equipped to work in remote areas for extended periods of time with little logistical support.

For once, Jan Brewer can speak for me.

This is as dark a day as I can remember, with Arizona suffering the truly unimaginable loss of 19 wildland firefighters.

Not just Arizona’s loss. Most of the Hot Shots will be in the Northwest in a couple of weeks. They go where they are needed. The whole community of firefighters are hurting right now, while they go on working.

Terrible. These were very brave men who placed their lives on the line to save others. They and their efforts are to be honored.

I just saw the list this morning. I hadn’t realized how young most of them were. :(
