This is considered brilliant? It sounds more like the Democrats are afraid of their own legislation and are content to let the issue hang over the 2014 elections like a sword of Damocles.

I think we need to consider the opposition when judging this move by Obama. The Democrats are absolutely not dealing with an above the table opponent or a loyal opposition. If Obama has to play a few games against these petulant children in the GOP I’m OK with that.

What is interesting to me is that the employees who would’ve been insured by their employers will instead have to purchase their own policies from the exchanges, unless their income is low enough to qualify for Medicaid (and we know many states have refused Medicaid expansion). If the exchanges are the disaster the GOP is desperately hoping for, this could be a problem for Democrats. But if they work fairly well, it could help provide enough healthy young people in the individual pool for the exchanges to work well.

dragonath - everyone honestly agrees that this is due to the fact that there is going to be pain felt when these are implemented but the fact is that he took this off the table for the 2014 elections for pure cynical political reasons. And good for him as Christopher’s Bitchins stated, when you are playing against a side that isn’t fair, take every advantage.

As James Carville once famously said, “If Hillary gave Obama one of her balls he’d have one and she’d still have two!”

US Politics at the national level isn’t about being MR Nice guy. He is too nice and more than a little too naive.

re: #4 Heywood Jabloeme

I’m seeing a disconnect here. He’s showing how tough he can be by compromising the reporting requirements? It signals a lack of confidence- and that may be worse.

It shoves the issue doen the throat of the Republicans who were going to run on the fact that this portion of ACA wasn’t working well.

This reduces it to a Benghazi for Fox News and Republcians - preaching to the choir. If they had went ahead and required its implementation it would have negatively effected about 10% of businesses that do not now comply and the Repblicans would have used it to get to Independents etc.

This is a very crass, brazen and cynical politcal move that is typical of power politics. Slick Willy Clinton was a master of it but people forget, triangulation, the small meaningless proposals that weren’t serious and would never be implemented but made people think that he was on thier side.

The lack of this kind of politics is what is keeping Obama from really exploiting his advantages over the Republicans and many feel is some of the reason why he has won politically while the Democrats as a group and a party, much less so.

Hillary will not lack this.
