Absolutely. We’re supposedly not an imperial power. Let’s stop acting like one.

The legacy of Dubya’s administration lives on! By now, we could’ve helped Afghanistan built an economy independent of the Taliban and other warlords, and a stable central government that could resist and defeat said warlords. But no, Bush jr just had to redirect all military and nation building resources to Iraq, and leave a destabilized Afghanistan to pull itself up by their own bootstraps.

What Obama tried to do to fix it was too little too late. The ship had set sail long ago. The warlords had rebuilt their power and gotten used to our tactics, the people became dependent on farming drug crops for the warlords, and nobody there trusts Americans after Dubya’s broken promises.

Not to mention the damage done by our troops. “Wait, what?”

No matter what our intentions, staying so goddam long has consequences. On a long enough timeline, all possibilities become inevitable. We gave the enlisted plenty of time to develop pdst and let it fester right there in Afghan villages. (because StopLoss re-deployments were such a great idea) We also gave the bad apples, those who enlisted for the wrong reasons in the first place, plenty of opportunity to do terrible things.

I guess war, especially long-term war, has a tendency to bring out the worst in us. Who knew?

But to balance our abject failure in Afghanistan, we at least have a new ally in Iraq. Oh, wait a minute…!
