‘I Hate LP&L’ Protest Scheduled for Monday Morning at Lubbock Power and Light Offices
Lubbock Power and LOOT. This uproar was over a recent rate increase that LP&L executives claimed would average just $10 per customer. Anecdotal accounts of individual charges doubling abound and local media have confirmed many of these. LP&L used to have a competitor but they bought it out with the blessing of the city leadership. Now, it is one of the most high-handed, arrogant, and unaccountable robber-baron monopolies in the country. Among other things, nobody is a month behind on their electric bill in Lubbock because LP&L will unfailingly cut you off for being 10 days late, 20 if you make a signed-in-blood guaranteed payment arrangement with them. Service is terrible with more outages in the past two years, 21, than in the preceding 20 years combined. The only area to have improved is executive compensation, which has reportedly increased 500% in five years.
The recent massive increase in electric rates has caused the “I Hate LP&L” Facebook page to skyrocker in popularity, garnering thousands of likes in under 24 hours. Now, a protest of LP&L is being organized through the page, scheduled for next week. Sumner, the organizer of the protest, said that, as of today, over 700 people are scheduled to attend. She also said that she chose to start the protest at LP&L because of the many people who wanted to show their faces there as opposed to starting at City Hall, but added that the protest may trickle down to City Hall as well.
The protest will take place Monday morning form 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM at Lubbock Power and Light offices, located at 1301 Broadway. Sumner stressed that this is intended to be a peaceful protest, and that protesters will not engage in any riotous activities like stopping traffic or harming others.
