The bookmarklet grabbed an unrelated video from I-don’t-know-where, and even though I deleted it, it shows up when I tweet this Page. Is it a demon?

Steve Cohen (D-Memphis) ran into a similar problem when he tried to join the Congressional Black Caucus — he thought since his district is 85% black, it shouldn’t matter that he isn’t…

Okay so we have official congressional entities that are encouraged to screen membership by race. Wow. Hypocrisy & irony alloyed for legislative bodies. I call that alloy shameless steel.

I respect the right of these Caucuses to define their own membership requirements, even if I disagree with them. There are two sometimes competing objectives when making the decision to limit membership. One is further development of the members as political operatives and representatives of their communities. The other is to represent the interests of their communities. Anyone can do the latter, but if, say, a white person becomes a leader in a caucus representing non-white people, it defeats the former objective.

I don’t know whether the Women’s Caucus allows men to join. By the title, I would guess they do: Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues. But if they want to promote women as legislators, they should not have men competing with them in their own caucus. Think what it could be like if the caucus became majority male.

Here’s the LGBT Equality Caucus rule:

Unlike the Congressional Black Caucus, famous for admitting only black members, the LGBT Equality Caucus admits any member who is willing to advance LGBT rights, regardless of their sexual identity or orientation.

So I don’t think the Congressional Hispanic Caucus is being hypocritical or ironic. I think the rule stems from a time when Hispanics needed to promote the image of Hispanics as capable members of Congress. My disagreement stems from my opinion that this position is no longer the most expedient way to accomplish the agenda of equality in American society. Mr. O’Rourke deserves a place in it as a representative of his district.
