A great performance all around. Prince’s solo is pure Prince—tons of showmanship but also incredible virtuosity on the guitar. Amazing, first time I saw this a few years back, my jaw hit the floor. I knew Prince was a great all-around instrumentalist, but I had no idea he was that freaking great on guitar.

No doubt that Prince has mega-talent, but in my opinion the song was great up until his over-the-top, frantic guitar solo that fractured the flow of the song. Pity.

This is my 3rd fav version of this song, after the above and the original.

Yeah, that whole smooth, capable confidence exhibited by everyone else on stage - Prince possesses none of it. He’s showboating to the point he nearly falls offstage. It was an homage to George Harrison, not the Prince Show. OTOH, I don’t know why anyone would expect anything else of Prince. Subtlety is not his strong suit.

This is sort of beside the point, but this is my favorite George Harrison song. He had a lot more song-writing ability than Lennon and McCartney ever gave him credit for, going back to the beginning of the Beatles. Don’t Bother Me is the best song on With the Beatles; should have been a single.

Agree…but so what? Subtlety has its place…but lack of is not always a bad thing, especially in music. Was Hendrix subtle? Was Jerry Lee Lewis subtle?
Janis Joplin was subtle, right?

Music is entertainment…an element of entertainment is showboating. But you have to have the talent to back it up. Prince does.

You lost me at Janis Joplin - she would have benefited from an ability to be subtle as well as all-out. She had a wondrous voice but knowing how to use it with more control and dynamic range would have been so much more effective, IMHO

I don’t think her lack of subtlety hurt her any. Though had she lived to be a good deal older, I could see her mellowing out a bit and still being great.
