Downding for saying that banks want to enslave people in Detroit. That’s just plain over-the-top wacky.

As for Detroit’s art, I say it should be auctioned off. That’s how bankruptcy works: You lose your treasures. They are surrendered to a trustee who sells them and then uses the monies from the sale to pay your creditors.

Historic cars are not vital to a city, though their loss may wound its morale. greatly. But the law shouldn’t care about that: Before the whole state of Michigan suffers additional taxes, before pensions are cut, art and other valuables belonging to the city should be sold. That is what is fairest to all the state’s people, and it is the scenario envisioned by the law.

Bullshit.

Let’s carry that to its logical extreme — before the American people suffer additional taxes, should we sell Yosemite to real estate developers? Maybe lease mineral rights to Yellowstone? I bet the Statue of Liberty would bring a good price if we offer it to one of the hotels in Dubai.

Meanwhile, the “emergency city manager who’s only trying to do right by the city” is working with the Governor to cut corporate taxes even more, cut personal income taxes for the wealthy, and give hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to build a new stadium for the Redwings and some other corporate welfare.

The nation as a whole isn’t bankrupt, so some that drastic isn’t needed. Detroit is at the end of its rope and such solutions are needed. Even then, the idea is things like “Sell the concept car, use the money to fix the streets. Cut corporate taxes to attract business and jobs.”

That won’t work. All that will do is put more money in the hands of already wealthy executives and shareholders.

But here’s the thing: your party wants Detroit to fail. They’re celebrating its bankruptcy. Partly because they think it validates their economic theories (it doesn’t); and partly because they just don’t give a shit about big liberal heavily Democratic cities (not “real America” to them).

So tell me, how does a nation thrive when its citizens are actively rooting for other parts of the nation to deteriorate? That’s a far deeper problem than one city’s bankruptcy. It suggests that America isn’t really very united overall, has lost the unity we had decades ago, and that we’re now stuck in a bloodless but nonetheless real war based on deep cultural divisons. The polarization is the worst since the Civil War. It may not turn bloody, but it’s a terrible sign for any sort of social cohesion in the future.
