The Lincoln Memorial was shut down Friday morning after vandals splashed the statue of the nation’s 16th president and the marble floor around it with green paint, U.S. Park Police said.

Police are reviewing surveillance footage from the popular tourist attraction on the west end of the Mall, but so far they have released no information about who may have been responsible.

As an American, I am pissed about this.

As a former DC resident and current Metro DC resident, I am double-extra pissed about this.

See, the Lincoln Memorial is one of my very favorite places in the world. Many has been the time I’d go down there around midnight, climb the steps, visit Abe, then come out of the stauary chamber and sit on one of the top steps with my back settled into the curve of a pillar. And just look out, over the Reflecting Pool, past the Washington Monument, and all the way down the Mall to the Capitol Building.

Just maxing and relaxing, people-watching, or chatting with a friend if one came along with me.

I’m hoping the vandals are just stupid kids. I really don’t want to think how angry I’d be if there was a political point to this. I don’t think there is; it doesn’t make any sense.

Grr. Argh.
