I am a pedestrian most of the time. In fact I don’t even have my driver’s license. I know I’m a lousy driver. My reflexes suck, my situational awareness is bad and being on a crowded road triggers my agoraphobia something fierce.

And being a pedestrian is like being a prey animal. You have to be careful all the time.

That said, I’m not sure autonomous cars are a good idea. Giving computers, and the often sadly limited people know as computer programmers, that much power may not be wise.

Computers can react millions of times more quickly than our brains, and will never get distracted, start steaming, have a bad day, etc. They can also ‘see’ in all directions in various across a wider range of spectrum than we can.

Once the kinks are worked out, computer driven cars will not get into at fault accidents, period. Until the kinks are worked out, well… that’s why it’ll take several more years.

Put a perfectly functioning computer in a car that has dozens of critical moving parts that can fail, and then add mother nature to the mix and we come back to the dilemmas. Computers deciding what to do to deal with an out of control car or object on a collision course.

Computers always risk failures. So I think we need triple redundancy for safety. Just like steer or brake by wire. Then what of malicious induced failures or hacks?

I kinda like having an adjustable level of computer assistance, but I’m not taking a nap.
