I know of plenty of pedestrian buttons that do work. How do I know? Because if you don’t push them then the walk portion of the light cycle is skipped. In fact, one light I regularly go through by car stays green longer for vehicles when a pedestrian has pushed the walk button. That’s because the vehicle green light needs to include the length of time required for the walk signal as a subset of the time it stays green. So I know that when I’m approaching by car and the walk sign is not on (or flashing red prior to going continuously red) then I will have less time to get my car through the green light.

Another light I occasionally go though as a pedestrian requires the button to be pushed. Sometimes the first pedestrian to the red light doesn’t push the button and all subsequent pedestrians assume the button has been pushed so they don’t push it either, resulting in a skipped walk signal. If you push that particular button then you always get a walk signal when the cycle gets around to the right point.

The article is spot-on though regarding “close door” buttons. I gave up on those long ago. I think they may be reserved for manual operation of the elevator, such as by repair workers and firefighters.

I have always wanted to do a psychological study on the number of times people press the close door button, it is very amusing to watch people get increasingly agitated when they don’t get immediate satisfaction with the close door button punching it 5 or 6 times when it doesn’t appear to work….take a chill pill folks

I personally know of several working pedestrian buttons in Austin, and I live 70 miles from there. They even have voice indicators telling you “you may cross 31st & Guadalupe’, for example, then count down the seconds till the light turns red. ABC must not have looked very hard.
