ummm…the NRA’s beloved American Eagle is now seriously under threat due to lead poisoning from ammunition AND lead contamination of fish as a result of lead ammunition from waterfowl hunting.
idiots.

I say the opposite. We may have found the source of many low IQs, and need to get all the wingnuts on chelation therapy ASAP.

Removing the lead from my blood is a communist plot!!1!

Some things to know:

1. These groups keep damanding the EPA ban lead ammo even though the EPA is forbidden by federal law from doing so. These petitions are an exercise in futility as the law stands, but they allow environmentalists to blacken the names of hunters.

2. In many cases lead is used because use of other heavy metals is banned because laws banning sale of armor-piercing rounds for handguns to civilians.
Please understand that I am not, repeat not, advocating the sale to civilians of actual rounds designed to penetrate body armor. But the law governing such is out of date and as it stands it is inhibiting the development of rounds that would be less toxic. Until the laws get changed, a ban on lead would be a constitutionally questionable ban on hunting.

So the NRA actually has some real points in their corner and they actually have been meeting with the ATF to sort out the ammo issue (which is likely part of why they did not demand a ‘no’ vote on the confirmation of the ATF’s new director).

DF, it’s sort of hard to make new laws when the NRA fights so hard against such laws going into place. And based upon previous negotiations I think the NRA position is no restrictions and allow all on the ammo issue.

I do not think of today’s NRA as an honest broker at this particular table.

Look, I’m not an ammo expert, but it took me about 3 seconds on Google to find a bunch of non-lead containing hunting ammo. Care to explain why hunters can’t just use those?

For starters, lead is extremely convenient if you want to self-load, AFAIK.

Oh, well in that case, just for you princess, let’s kill off the fish and the birds.

Why didn’t you just say so?

Wouldn’t want you to be inconvenienced!

Have a downding, asshat. Ace-o-aces wonders what makes lead so special, and I actually add something constructive to a debate. You should try it sometime.

Really though (and I don’t actually have any experience with ammo specifically here) have you ever tried casting stuff in different metals?
There’s not a lot you can conveniently melt down with more or less regular tools.
The non-lead ammo seems to predominantly be copper ammo; that’s not something you can really melt and cast at home AFAIK (wouldn’t know, it’s either lead/tin/antimony alloys for miniatures or silver for a bit of fine work for me) so I can see that would be an issue for some.

Also, have a look at what copper prices are doing. That’s not going to reverse (or slow down, for that matter) any time soon.

Really, I’m not invested in this either way but I can see how this could be an issue for folks who hunt to eat for financial reasons.
