Hey! Don’t ask we True Believers™ to take responsibility for our actions. We’re close to God and so are beyond such mortal concerns.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Once you start engaging in magical thinking, there’s no limit to how far off the rails you can go with your fantasy-based worldview.

a deep and sobering reality: Free, anonymous, and ubiquitous access to pornography is quietly transforming American men and American culture….

So the RWNJ loves them some Freedom except when they don’t. They don’t wants no social-engineering, except when it’s their social engineering. /

Notice James D. Conley occupation?

I read that article this morning after reading this one. Challenges, indeed.

I realize many people have arguments with the Catholic church over womens’ issues - as do I - but construing this as excusing Castro is out of line. I don’t see anything in this essay justifying/excusing mistreatment of women, or excusing Castro.

Conley makes the quite correct argument that abundant pornography is harmful to society. I’m no prude about porn, but in this case, he’s right; porn is one (of many) factors in the breakdown of the family in our society.

Like it or not, social conservatives are right about some things, and this is one of them.

Which makes sensationalizing this as “falling for Castro’s pathetic excuses” a ridiculous assertion.

Except that studies have shown no correlation between porn use and sexual assaults.

What else do you think social conservatives are right about?

What pisses me off about some of my fellow Christians is their tendency to engage in dispensing forgiveness on a sliding scale. What they should be doing is calling a wrong a wrong, but they have failed to do that by making differences among citizens based on sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, race, religion, political affiliation, etc. Someone like Donald Trump can say very ugly things on TV and these tools won’t say one word, but let someone like Nancy Pelosi say something about needing republicans to work on a budget, and they’re needing smelling salts and fainting couches. It’s no wonder to me why more Americans are turning away from organized religion when they see so many so-called Christians lying, pushing outrageous propaganda and conspiracy theories, and dispensing injustice while claiming to be holier than thou. This is the main reason I left my own church over 10 years ago. Ariel Castro is a misogynist and a rapist, and anyone who says he isn’t is a liar. It’s clear that he didn’t think much of women because he abducted them, kept them confined in his home, beat them, made them lose their babies when they were pregnant, and still thinks he did nothing wrong. He treated those women like chattel and felt they had no right to live their own lives. The only way he could hold onto them was to abuse them and keep them locked up.

Clearly you are in a big way, so why pretend you aren’t?

Reminds me of reading about the religious right who bought Ted Bundy blaming his problems on pornography. Note to the religious right, stop falling for manipulative psychopaths who want to use you to rationalize their own fucked up behavior.

I must be well and truly fucked then, because I write ‘pornography’. Worse, the kinky kind for the most part. Involving floggers, cuffs and chains

Actually it’s erotica but loons like you can’t tell the difference.

They also can’t tell the difference between consent and lack thereof (same goes for the gibbering idiots who equate adult LGBT relationships with child abuse - and by fantastic coincidence, they’re social conservatives as well!)
