I see such-and-such store parking only signs all the time. It means those spots are reserved for customers at such-and-such establishment. Perfectly understandable. These signs could have read “Westview Shopping Center Parking Only. Others Will Be Towed.” Others meaning anyone, Muslim or not, that were not patronizing that establishment and using their parking spaces.

But this means YOU PARTICULAR people can’t park here because US people don’t want you, especially when you’re being pesky around Ramadan. That’s a different tone entirely. And I would venture the mall owner never politely or discreetly asked anyone at the mosque to remind its attendees to please not take Westview Shopping Center parking spots. No, a snotty sign was more fun.

I doubt that the mall owner had anything to do with this.

On the other hand, this is Texas, so …..?

The article said one of the mall’s employees said the mall owner put the signs up, but that may not be true. Could be rumor, best guess, or pure bullshit.

It looks as though the shopping mall did not want mosque worshippers taking up parking spots that were supposed to be for customers. In that case it would have been appropriate to put up signs saying that the parking lot was for customers only.

My thought as well. Then I was wondering. I’m not up on all religious practices. If Mosque worshippers go daily for a short prayer session, wouldn’t that make shopping at that center convenient for them?

Might be better to welcome the parking—as an incentive to business.

What do I know?, I’m Just the FemNazi Capitalist here.

You, I, and all reasonably sane people would see the opportunity as you pointed out, FNB. People, such as the sign poster, however, are constantly making choices or acting in ways that are in direct opposition to their own personal best interests in order to appease some prejudice or hatred or make a political point. It is how they roll.

I could see signs saying “No Mosque Parking”, because you see signs saying “No (fill in large nearby building with insufficient parking) Parking” or “Customer Parking Only” signs in various places, but there is a world of difference between that and “No Muslim Parking”.

I’ve noticed that some Christians get pissed off when anyone objects to them parking where they aren’t supposed to park. One example comes to mind. A guy in AZ was running a church in his backyard and his congregants were parking all along the street, blocking his neighbors’ driveways. When the neighbors took the case to the city, the Christians were outraged, outraged, I tells ya! I understand the store owner didn’t want spaces for his customers taken up by those going to services at the Mosque, but what I don’t understand is why he had a sign up singling out Muslims in particular. A general warning about all unauthorized parking would have been a better decision, and a fairer decision, imho. Now, please, remind me, who is causing divisiveness in this country at the present time? Is President Obama still the major culprit?

But it’s Muslim money. That’s no good.

My guess is that the folks who put the signs up have absolutely no idea that this isn’t essentially what they wrote.

I disagree. I think they know exactly what they wrote, and they meant it. What’s the difference between this and “No Coloreds” signs?

I KNOW we’re not supposed to attribute to malice what is perfectly explainable by stupidity, but I’m having a particularly hard time doing that right now…

I don’t know if the owner of the shopping center (or whoever put up the signs) intended them to come across as malicious as they did, but I’m 100% certain that if the owner had simply walked across the street, as theheat mentioned in #1, and asked to speak to someone in charge, the imam would’ve been glad to make an announcement (and issue subsequent reminders) about not parking there.
