I don’t understand why hacks like this have privileged positions in American life. Being part of the mainstream press should be a privilege and require at least some dignity and standards.

It’s just the conservative reverse-meritocracy at work. When a subculture defines itself by hating smart people and doing the opposite of whatever clued-in people are doing, it elevates people like Starnes, Kincannon, Cruz, Gohmert, Palin, Santorum, Bachmann, etc… As long as stupid sells well to this subculture, the situation isn’t going to change.
