Well put and educational. Don’t even mention your white privilege or any other concepts that might give others an excuse to dismiss you based on prepackaged narratives. Just focus on simple fairness and common sense that anyone can understand in the context of that particular situation. That’s not the complete solution by any means but it’s an opening wedge to improve understanding and empathy.

I’ve experienced this more times than I’d care to count—where a checker will be very friendly & polite with others, then either completely cold & silent or even somewhat rude/hostile with me. It’s very, very obvious and it sucks.

When I’m at the checkout, I always look at the checkout’s name tag and I say “Thank you [checker’s name]”

Also, I never see people pay by check, it’s always by swiping a card. What kind of card (credit, debit, EBT) I don’t pay attention to.

Is it because you are wearing hijab?

Well, at least we love you here. A small comfort, perhaps.

I guess so. I can’t think of any other reason.

Where I do a lot of my shopping, it seems like I am the only one who is not in hijab. :)

It’s Dearborn, duh!

Yet another disgusting symbol of sexist religious oppression. Maybe the men should cover themselves with hijabs too - no wait, that would be equitable.

That’s not necessarily true. Many women freely choose to wear a hijab.

Sideways is just having a bad day because some people pointed and laughed when he wore his strainer-hat at the mall.
