I remember seeing a very effective article on this, and I believe it was here. It showed that it wasn’t really a R vs D issue, the voting lines broke out very strongly North vs South in terms of it’s passage.

My favorite meme of the right, MLK was a republican. Easily disproven by his own correspondence, but when you push them on it, crickets.

I found the breakdown by region vs party. it shows votes For and Against, and then the percentage breakdown

The original House version:
Southern Democrats: 7–87 (7–93%)
Southern Republicans: 0–10 (0–100%)

Northern Democrats: 145–9 (94–6%)
Northern Republicans: 138–24 (85–15%)

The Senate version:

Southern Democrats: 1–20 (5–95%)
Southern Republicans: 0–1 (0–100%)

Northern Democrats: 45–1 (98–2%)
Northern Republicans: 27–5 (84–16%)

Who is enjoying Atlanta this week.

They may have well started out the decade as the party of CR but by nominating Goldwater who had been one of the few opponents of the CRA of 1964 and later Nixon embracing the Southern Strategy, they forfetied any right to claim moral supremacy on that issue.

I’d love this to be pushed into rwnj twitterland, but all they’ll claim is liberals are using statistical hocus-pocus to make it look like the right are bigoted.

Hocus pocus such as facts?

Hocus pocus such as facts?

You have to understand, these are ungodly materialistic based facts. It’s not like they are from a good solid source like David Barton.

Innumeracy occasionally rears its ugly little head even in the real world, but RWNJs celebrate the close family ties they have with it.

The trend went all the way back to the 30s. There was a coalition of conservative, isolationist Democrats against any kind of civil rights legislation in the FDR administration and they often formed coalitions with the Republicans. Those kinds of people would have loved a President Lindbergh.

My favorite meme of the right, MLK was a republican.

His niece has pushed that one.

She’s also said that MLK was anti-abortion and anti-gay too. She seems to try to tie MLK to all kinds of right wing views, even though a casual survey of his activism after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 would show the complete opposite. In fact, were King alive today, I bet he would be derided as a “race hustler,” or “community organizer.”

Here’s a pretty good article about how she used MLK’s name:

What they’ll say actually, is that Southern Democrats are still Democrats, and the Civil Rights Act would never have been passed without Republican support.

They’ll also say the Klan was started by Southern Baptist Democrats.

This is a good question for curious historians. The important question for us is: “Will Republicans be the party of civil rights on Friday?”
