The Kissinger Option in Syria

…the West is wrong to think it has no good options. It has a superb and just option, one that will let history unfold as it should have long ago. That option - to break up Syria into choerent nations - was prpose earlier this summer by former U.S. secretary of State Henry Kissinger in a father at the Ford School

Whatever you may think of him, and his dubious morality, Kissinger may have hit the nail on the head. Though, I am sure that a broken Syria would be anathema to states like Russia and Saudi Arabia who long for their proxy forces to have hegemony there.

What do you all think of this proposal?

Which of the major ethnic groups has shown any desire to be an independent state?

The Kurds obviously, but they pose a different challenge. With the ongoing conflict between Turkey and the PKK I’d imagine that both sides would become more radicalized with the establishment of an independent Kurdistan on Turkey’s borders.

Some other groups are too small to form a strong nation state in a balkanized Syria (the Druze).

And this is all assuming that both sides will allow the other to remain in power over much of what they believe is their nation.

Post-Communist Yugoslavia was broken up into a number of coherent nations. Hardly been any problems there since.
