McMegan always has the most bestest advice.

But I’d be more certain of her recommendation’s virtues if she herself took that path to a promising career. //

Live on the dividends from the stock that your parents gave you.

This is disgusting, especially as I keep looking for entry level anything in my own field.

I have many not nice thoughts on McArdle right now.

When you look up “glibertarian” in the dictionary, you find Ms. McArdle’s press clippings.

I’m not going to be so hard on Megan about this particular recommendation she is giving. The reason is that in life I’ve discovered the maxim that it is who you know that matters, and especially in your career, is true. Volunteering or doing an unpaid internship has long been a way for people to get to meet people in a field and learn about what an organization really wants, while not having a long term commitment - remember, the volunteer intern can leave any time they want.

It seems that a lot of Mc’s seem to be blithering drooling idiots. Pisses me off because my surname begins with Mc, and I am nothing of the kind this and others are. Snail trail. You can also get a paper route. Sell pencils downtown. Sell pretzels at intersections. Clean windshields at red lights. Pull your boot straps up so high, they’re up your ass.

Working for free is a terrible, terrible idea. As I explained in my remarks on the article, if this becomes part of a business plan, it just brings down wages for more experienced workers since what once used to be “entry level” becomes the standard wage for the next step up.

Look at the other horrible advice she gives. “Don’t default on your student loans.” Well DUH you can’t! But how in the fuck are you going to pay those student loans if you’re working for free?

That said, I have worked (and still worki) for free for my own non-profit foundation, and pay myself with the Zionist checks when they come in. That fills the gaps on my resume and the foundation pays for software updates so that I can stay current. But working for free for somebody else who could afford to pay is just Teh Suck.

The corporation that I currently work for not only pays its summer interns at double the minimum wage but also finds them room and board during their internship.

I’ve got a better idea. Why don’t we put some Wall Street crooks in jail and see if that doesn’t encourage other Wall Street crooks to obey the law from now on?

McArdle has written some ridiculous things over the years. But this articles isn’t really one of them. Less than optimal job is better than none.

“Less than optimal”? Rather, “not an option at all” when you can’t afford it.

Yeah who needs to eat or pay rent for a year?

She just ASSUMES that everyone can “move in with their parents” so they don’t need to pay for rent and food because mom & dad are always there to provide it for free!

What if mom & dad also happen to be unemployed? What if they’re retired and moved to a 1-bedroom condo because they don’t need that big house? What if there is just mom or just dad and they can’t afford to provide free room & board for adult child?

And I already explained twice, when “working for free” becomes the norm for “entry level” then everybody’s pay goes down accordingly. Why is “less then optimal” for EVERYBODY OK with you?

The thing about internships is they are only temporarily. I am a recent grad and recently got one myself. I am glad that have gotten it but at the same time, the unpaid internship is something we could have been doing while we were working towards our degree not to mention not all of us have parents that are willing to let us stay at their place or help us with our commute while we have this position. And businesses/government can only employ only certain interns. It’s time for employers to take a chance on young grads and give them a start. Tired of businessmen who want to keep every last penny for themselves because they want to pinch every corner because their personal wealth matters more to them than the service they are providing.
