Fall TV: Wednesday and Thursday Nights
It’s fall and time to reprogram the Tivo - new shows are premiering, old favorites might be moving, and this season will throw a few curveballs at your Tivo timings with extended premiers and season finales on some shows. (e.g. Breaking Bad extends their final two episodes by fifteen minutes and Grey’s Anatomy opens with a two hour premier, in November Bones moves to Friday nights.) This list is not complete, it’s just the favorites from six people in my family. If anything you like is missing then speak up in comments. Once again all times are Central.
Wednesday Night
Arrow 7:00 PM CW 10/9
Survivor 7:00 PM CBS 9/18
Criminal Minds 8:00 PM CBS 9/25
The Tomorrow People CW 8:00 PM 10/9
Super Fun Night 8:30 ABC 10/2
Ironsides 9:00 PM NBC 10/2
CSI 9:00 PM CBS 9/25
Top Chef Bravo 9:00 PM 10/2
CW’s Arrow will be followed by a new SF based super hero show, “The Tomorrow People” - this should fit well with Arrow, and along with Beauty and the Beast, counterbalances their supernatural vampire shows with SF themed super hero shows. I’m just hoping they don’t go off the rails like other ensemble super hero shows have done (Alphas and Heroes both come to mind.)
Super Fun Night looks like it has great potential as a comedy - think of it like Muriel’s Wedding crossed with Sex in the City (but without the sex…) Ironsides looks great from the previews, but like all things that look good, writing and production values will determine this reboot’s fate. Survivor has already started but you should be able replay the first episode from cbs.com or your cable’s on demand, this season pits favorites against their relatives.
Thursday Night
Once Upon A Time In Wonderland NBC 7:00 PM 9/26 10/10
The Crazy Ones 7:30 CBS 9/26
Grey’s Anatomy 8:00 PM ABC 9/26
White Collar USA 8:00 PM USA 10/17
Project Runway Lifetime 8:00 PM (in progress)
The Michael J Fox Show NBC 8:00 PM 9/26 (1 hour premier)
Welcome to the Family NBC 8:30 10/3
Covert affairs USA 9:00 PM 10/17
Scandal 9:00 PM ABC 10/3
Elementary CBS 9:00 PM 9/26
Parenthood NBC 9:00 PM 9/26
Thursday night has always been a train wreck in Tivo land, and it’s likely that you will have conflicts unless you are running one of the new four channel boxes or a couple of converters from your cable company.
Following the success of Once Upon a Time, ABC is starting another fantasy series based on Alice in Wonderland, and it looks promising.
The Crazy Ones is a new comedy starring Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Geller - while Sarah fell flat in the drama department with the cancellation of Ringer, she was always good at Dramedy, so this new comedy might work.
Fan Favorite Michael J. Fox returns with his own show after a long guest appearance run on The Good Wife. The normal half hour comedy kicks off with a full hour premier, and in the following week a new half hour comedy premiers to create an hour long comedy block.
Welcome to the Family is a new comedy with one of my favorites, Mary McCormick in it. (If you haven’t seen the under rated “In Plain Sight” you should go stream all five seasons at Netflix now, you will become a convert.) It will play after the Michael J. Fox Show starting in October.
