Interesting. Thanks for the information.

Reading the alloying made me remember the Hittite documentary I watched over the weekend on Dr. Lizardo’s recommendation: the Hittites were a bronze age civilization and bronze of course is made by hardening copper with tin. Since copper and tin are almost never found together, bronze requires long distance trade. Tin was the magic ingredient and so the first king of the Hittites was described as a Lion of a man with Tin teeth. Now it would probably be steel or perhaps diamond but in the context of 1600 BC Anatolia, tin teeth would be pretty scary…

But back to jewelry, I’ll stick to silver though. Not sure why but Coin or Sterling just looks better to me.

Neat. I’ve been under the impression that gold-aluminum alloys are difficult to work with because they are brittle.

Neat. I’ve been under the impression that gold-aluminum alloys are difficult to work with because they are brittle.

It is very brittle. But I think I can make it stronger. Like better glass. Still brittle but more durable.

It’s certainly got a real charm to it. I’m guessing it would work better in real delicate objects though; anything as ‘blockish’ (sorry! wouldn’t know how else to put it) as this tends to almost make it look toy-like to me. However, earrings could be fantastic.
When you say it’s too delicate, does it bend or does it break?

It breaks like glass. Inter metallic structure. It’s never supposed to be a ring, the idea is pendants and earrings only. The ring was made for testing crush strength. And to have more surface area to examine.

It’s not an alloy in the usual sense of the word. In an alloy the two metals randomly fill spots in the crystal lattice, and no particular bond is favored so the rows of atoms can easily slide over each other. But this is an intermetallic compound, AuAl2, in which each gold atom is locked to two particular aluminum atoms, yielding a basic crystal unit that is not very strong but tends not to slide, so it just gives catastrophically. There isn’t much you can do about it. Maybe try reinforcing fiberglass fibers?

In a way, but think grain refining with a higher temperature element. At this point Ru and Pt/Ir are the trials. Plus I hope the design constraints are kept! No rings.
