It’s not really “hunting” when you can walk to your prey and shoot them in the face. That’s called slaughtering.

I think it’s disgusting that he was so unprepared for an elephant hunt that he had to shoot one repeatedly, in the face, before chasing it and bringing it down with a high-powered rifle.

The hunters I know take great pains to kill cleanly, and to prepare in such a way that the animal doesn’t suffer. I don’t like the idea of elephant hunting, period, but it’s especially foul that he did such a crap job.

So he killed it because “people are hungry”? So who ate the elephant?

His whole excuse is so smug, nonsensical and convoluted, you can just TELL he is a turd of a human being.

Hopeless. This guy is armed with some kind of monstrous double rifle, and he still can’t bring the animal down cleanly at point-blank range.

In the early twentieth century, professional safari hunter W.D.M “Karamojo” Bell shot more than 1000 elephants, almost all with small caliber rifles chambered for such military-derived rounds as 7x57 Mauser and .303 Enfield. Bell also used a very challenging trademark shot, from diagonally behind the animal, to achieve clean one-shot kills.

I admire Bell more for his service in World War I than for his hunting skills, but also as a point of comparison for modern hunters like Makris. Bell set a standard they could never match, mostly because he lived and worked in a different world.
It is long past time to close the book on this form of “sport.”
