No mention of made of what sort of medical test is supposed to detect gayness. I only glanced at the Daily Mail article referenced by AlterNet since it isn’t referred to as the Daily Fail for no reason.

Anyway, the whole thing reminds me of how the most virulently homophobic wingnuts are often the ones that get caught secretly having gay sex.

Why does it remind me of that? Because a couple of decades ago, pretty much Arab I knew who had done some traveling in the ME told me that Kuwait was famous for its gays. This info wasn’t whispered in a *GASP—ZOMG* kind of way, but rather in a very matter-of-fact manner. I don’t know if things have changed since then though.

There was a long feature on The Atlantic about gay life in the KSA, which was rather enlightening, I must say.

Anyways, wish we could boycott the Gulf states like Russia, but since a majority of Muslims sadly agree with these moves, doubt there will be much change. Homophobia is still rampant amongst a lot of Muslims and anyone who says otherwise is in complete denial. That’s one thing the evangelical nutjobs and homophobic Muslims have in common.

How much of a majority? Which “moves” do they agree with—testing for gayness? How many other countries are performing these kinds of tests? Do you have hard numbers for any of this? If so, please link to your sources.

Anyways, wish we could boycott the Gulf states….Homophobia is still rampant amongst a lot of Muslims and anyone who says otherwise is in complete denial.

There’s simply a denial that gays even exist. Or do you not keep up with claims made by Iran, also a Gulf state and by far the largest Shia country, containing approximately 37%-40% of the world’s Shia population (PDF)?

“In Iran we don’t have homosexuals like in your country. In Iran we do not have this phenomenon, I don’t know who has told you that we have it,” —Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, speaking at Columbia University in NYC on September 24, 2007

I assume he denies their existence because those who didn’t have the means or desire to flee persecution would either be deeply closeted or have been executed. Also see the following 2010 Human Rights Watch report:

“We Are a Buried Generation”
Discrimination and Violence against Sexual Minorities in Iran
December 15, 2010

Based on testimony from more than 100 Iranians, this report documents discrimination and violence against LGBT people and others whose sexual practices and gender expression do not conform to government-endorsed socio-religious norms. Human Rights Watch analyzed these abuses within the context of the government’s violations against its general population, including arbitrary arrests and detentions, invasions of privacy, mistreatment and torture of detainees, and the lack of due-process protections and fair-trial guarantees.
