So when a reporter publishes something word-for-word from a politician’s or a spokesman’s mouth, they don’t need to both finding out whether it’s true because there are “fact-checkers” out there.
And when one of those fact-checkers later does the research the reporter should have done in the first place, the publication can ignore the report because they know just as well that “the other guy” will put out a press release about the fact-check, which they can also ignore.
