The interesting question to come out of all of this is: what are the criteria for being “smart”? When you say someone is smart, what does that mean?
Intelligence definitely comes in all different forms, and to understand how it manifests and what it means is tricky and all-too-often completely unclear.

That being said, any celebrity with a Ph.D. in a science has my respect. Hands down. That shit measures something other than smart - determination, stubbornness, whatever - but there’s a lot of people who have their potential livelihood relying on that who drop out. To stick with it when you have an alternate form of making a living says a TON.

I too have quite a bit of respect for those who have graduated college with an advanced degree. Some of these folks can’t think outside the box.

Yeah, reading through the list, it’s putting a lot of emphasis on IQ (really? ok, whatever - if someone is citing a number to make themselves feel good I don’t know what to say) and attending an Ivy League school and not enough on accomplishments. Natalie Portman being published twice? It doesn’t mention what the articles are in, so I reserve some judgement, but it’s worth a lot more than Colin Firth being a co-author because he commissioned a piece.
The Ph.D. in neuroscience means a lot more to me than James Franco’s college degree collection in the arts. (Sorry art majors.)

I am surprised they did not list Danica McKellar for her Math degrees and her books aimed at teenage girls.

My guess is probably too obscure, sadly. Although some of those names were pushing the limits.

They don’t mention Brian May of Queen… PhD in astrophysics, and he builds his own guitars.

And now that I think about it Dolph Lingren (?) who was in on of the Rocky movies had an advanced degree from Harvard in Physics. Also the late Kate Hepburn and her degree from Bryn Mawr. I am sure they missed quite a few celebrities.

The late Gene Kelly dropped out of U of Pittsburgh Law when he got “bitten” by the acting “bug.”

Hedy Lamarr. That is all.

He was my grandfather’s frat brother when they were roomies as the family legend goes. Steve Martin is an impressive guy. I remember my Dad reading one of his books and doing a double take when I saw “Steve Martin” as the author’s name and he also won a grammy musically. I like people like that. He’d be a fun guy to have a conversation with.

Ben Stein is an oft-cited authority on economics.
Um, really?
Personally I believe Stein is on the far side of the dividing line between genius and crazy. I mean, he’s the man behind Expelled.

Gene Kelly also had an undergraduate degree in econ. Not many econ majors fall back on their dancing skills for financial security!

At the moment in the UK one of the most prominent celebrities is Prof Brian Cox.
As a result of his presentations of Physics(he’s a particle Physics Prof) and his documentaries on space (wonders of the solar system and wonders of the universe and wonders of life) this lad seems to be responsible for an increase of 35% ,in applications for physics degrees.
Another is Prof Jim Al Khalili whose series on the atom was outstanding!
And Prof Stephen Hawking continues to soldier on!
All of these people are of course declared atheists!

Re: Natalie Portman:
Her 1998 high school paper, “A Simple Method to Demonstrate the Enzymatic Production of Hydrogen from Sugar,” co-authored with scientists Ian Hurley and Jonathan Woodward, was entered in the Intel Science Talent Search.[45] In 2002, she contributed to a study on memory called “Frontal Lobe Activation during Object Permanence: Data from Near-Infrared Spectroscopy” during her psychology studies at Harvard.
Another smart celebrity who comes to mind is Dexter Holland from the band The Offspring. He was a Molecular Bio PhD candidate at USC, but put it on hold to focus on the band (probably a good decision $$$.) He also has a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and a Master’s degree in Molecular Biology from USC.
Apparently he’s working on the PhD again, and recently was a coauthor on a paper published in PLOS One, “Identification of Human MicroRNA-Like Sequences Embedded within the Protein-Encoding Genes of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus”
