Oh yeah, this is on the facebook today. Not getting into this.

Will say this though, the Northern New Mexicans (yes there’s a big distinction) who like to play up how “Spanish” they are are kind of silly.

Wait, wait, wait, wait. There’s a New Mexico?

Isn’t there a cultural difference between the Spanish New Mexicans and the Mexican New Mexican as well as language differences, etc.?

Yes, just as my own family members have always been fast to proclaim ourselves Spaniards and hotly deny any insinuation of being Mexican.

Spaniards are White.
Spaniards are cultured and educated.
Spaniards speak Castilian, a true romance language.
Spaniards often came from Noble families.
Spaniards were granted their lands in the New World by the King himself!

Mexicans are mixed race (they bred with the “help” (native slaves)).
Mexicans have no true culture, just a jumbled up hodgepodge of Spanish, French, and Native behaviors and superstitions, and are uneducated.
Mexicans speak a bastardized version of Espanol with many words acquired from the French and Native cultures mixed in.
Mexicans are peasants and are the descendants of savages and slaves.
Mexicans overthrew the Spanish Colonial authorities in a revolt by an armed rabble made up of the offspring from the lower classes, Mestizos and Amerindians and then stole the lands granted to the noble families.
Etc.
Etc.

In other words, it is just another type of racism.
Much is made by the traditional “Spaniard” families of their “racial purity” which has been assiduously self-enforced for generations. They do not consider themselves to have anything in common with “Mexicans” and do not want to be mentally or verbally associated with them by other people.

Not that these beliefs of superiority are limited to Northern New Mexico, there are still many enclaves and families of “Pure Spaniards” within Mexico itself. :(

This is of course a real thing, but I don’t think Mekahlo Medina is guilty of it. Here’s the next part of his essay following the excerpt at the top:

It’s just their culture, not mine.

I know Central-Americans, Puerto Ricans, and Cuban-Americans living in Los Angeles feel the same way. Just because you’re brown, maybe speak Spanish, you must be from Mexico.

It’s not just a white person assumption. Plenty of my Mexican-American friends assume the same thing.

But “New Mexicans” are a different breed to say the least.

We are a mix of Spanish, indigenous, French, Irish and German. (More mixes since the 1900’s)

The first thing he adds to the mix with Spanish is ‘indigenous’. I don’t see any claim that the indigenous people of what is now Northern New Mexico are any better (or even different) than the indigenous people of what is now Mexico (although it could have been a defensible claim). Later he says,

For generations, the Spanish families attempted to have pure Spanish bloodlines, but human nature, attraction, and the lack of Spanish women often produced mixed off-spring.

The last bit from your comment:

Not that these beliefs of superiority are limited to Northern New Mexico, there are still many enclaves and families of “Pure Spaniards” within Mexico itself. :(

It’s not limited to Mexico, either, of course. My brother was talking to a guy in Bogota, Colombia (where he lives and teaches) about the attitude of Colombians towards the black people on the coast of Colombia. The guy told my brother, ‘Well, the people who live there are just lazy people who have no ambition.’ My brother told him, ‘There are people in my country who say that about your WHOLE country, in fact, your whole continent’.
