I’m Not Mexican! Not That There’s Anything Wrong With That
People look at me and assume I’m Mexican.
They hear my name and wonder if I’m Hawaiian.
Listen to me talk and think I must be Filipino.
I love living in Los Angeles where all of that is possible, but the truth is I’m nationally “American” and culturally “New Mexican.”
Not a Mexican newly here to the United States.
A “New Mexican” from the state of New Mexico. I have the gold flag with the red zia symbol on my desk to prove it. My family has been there since the 1700s.
I’m not dissing Mexicans. Their culture is rich and great.

I almost Paged this yesterday, but I’m glad I didn’t. My comment would have been something like, “Sounds like a northern New Mexican to me.” For the last 24 hours, it has been generating a hot discussion on Twitter.
