As far as I can remember, every place I’ve ever worked has had a policy against talking to the media as a representative of the organization.

As soon as this operator learned she was talking to the Hannity show, she should have immediately have put the call on hold and routed it to a supervisor. The rule is that if you receive a call that’s not in your split, you route it to the correct split. If you can’t identify the split then you route it to a supervisor.

I don’t work at a call center or know crap how it operates.

I do know that Hannity is not operating as a taxpayer inquiring about the service but an ‘infotainer’ engaged in a bit. Or an alleged journalist engaging in alleged journalism.

However you want to look at it the premise is false and the operator should not have taken the call.

We’re just candles of light in a sea of insanity.

Please do not confuse this with outrage or support for the GOP. Just among us here, just seems a pretty small infraction to be fired over. Write up/retrain and move on. I hope her family is not in a horrible financial crisis over this.

She’s not. She is getting a bunch of money from Hannity.

Our policy is nobody gets fired for talking to a media person, especially if in the context of their actual job duties. Small biz is very different though. No PR department, no one scrutinizing the airwaves for reactions.

Hannity is giving her a years salary and has gotten her a few job offers. She is gonna do just fine.

I don’t think she should have been fired but Hannity’s a jackass for pulling this stunt.

I’m not a call center operator but I do answer phones for the state government office I work for. Our procedure if the media calls and starts asking questions is to give them the number for the department press officer. Period. We answer no questions unless they’re “What is the number for the DPW press officer?”

And yes, if I were to go off that script and answer questions for attribution or ON THE AIR I would probably be terminated. The instructions are clear and we’re trained on them extensively. Operators do not have the authority to talk to the media, period.

I’ve reached the point where if it outrages the wingnuts I can safely dismiss it as being of no real importance.

The more spittle-flecked, bloodshot-eyed hoarse-voiced flaming hatred a wingnut displays, the more likely that I am in the middle of a completely insignificant discussion of matters that have zero bearing on reality or my life.
