1. I doubt that, as a practical matter, Witaschek faces two years in jail. Nevertheless, the capability to make the threat is part of the government’s leverage against him.

2. I’d like to see corroboration of this report.

3. That said, the police’s conduct it outrageous for at least two reasons:

a. The way they treated family members, and

b. The way they treated the neighborhood:

The police shut down the streets for blocks and spent more than two hours going over every inch of his house.

Afaik the Witaschek residence is not a stronghold of the Chechen Mafia.

4. If the report is corroborated, outrage should be nonpartisan.

Police based their search on a charge made by Mr. Witaschek’s estranged wife, who had earlier convinced a court clerk to issue a temporary restraining order against her husband for threatening her with a gun, although a judge later found the charge to be without merit.

I kind of wonder how the judge made that determination. It seems hard to prove that the husband never threatened the wife in that fashion unless the wife confessed to lying about it or was committed for being out of her mind. Maybe the judge assumed the wife was just trying to make life difficult for her husband———but I sure hope not!

There may have been nothing to corroborate her story and the children back his side of the story. And it’s possible his wife was just using that accusation as a divorce tactic. The frequency of such dishonest tactics by women is substantially overstated by misogynists, but nevertheless some women do use dishonest tactics like that.

Also, RWC, while your point is well made you should look for a better source than the Washington Times. i admire Emily Miller’s pluck, but she’s not careful enough in the company she keeps.

Quite right but she did en exclusive report. I went looking about and it’s mostly gun sites just linking to this story. And for whatever reason MSNBC seems uninterested. Perhaps too many editors agree with DC level anti gun efforts?

I think its more a refusal to criticize the ‘left’ side of the issue, aided by a belief that Emily Miller is simply a “gun-waving NRA whack-a-doo”.

The problem is that Ms. Miller would have written a better book had she taken Barack Obama’s name off the cover and focused a bit more on policy and less on personalities. But such a book would not have sold as well in the current overwrought political climate. [DF shakes his head sadly.]
