Hopefully, the 50th anniversary will be a turning point for this. It’s getting pretty clear that if there was a conspiracy, someone would have made at least a deathbed confession by now. I mean anyone who could have taken part would be at least 70-something-more likely like old Nazis, in their 90’s. If nothing else-someone would have leaked papers-in the age of the Internet, old files are just blog fodder now.

And I hope that we can celebrate whatever good came of the Kennedy Presidency. And do something about the toxic legacy of bitterness and suspicion that came out of the assassination.

And give LBJ his proper due as a reformer and Civil Rights activist. Young guys bitter about Vietnam have for a long time dominated our public discourse to the point that more people think that LBJ murdered Kennedy. than pay attention to the real reforms that have made America a better place overall.

Unfortunately probably not. Way too many people are emotionally (and financially) invested in Conspiracy Kook Land. It’s much easier to think that a cabal of shady government officials/business leaders/jooz!/alien lizard people/whatever are the cause of all woes, because then in their minds it’s something that has a simple fix, or at least make them money by making others think it does. The reality that the “system” is really super complicated and there are few to no bad guys pulling the strings is not something they want to (or often unable to) wrap their heads around.

There’s a feeling that if Kennedy had lived, Vietnam wouldn’t have happened. Never mind that JFK was facing a tough renomination fight for even considering civil rights. And a lot of people thought that Vietnam would be an easy win and believed in the domino theory. That perhaps, RFK would have lived and that maybe even Martin Luther King might have somehow survived.

I was going through Amazon and Audible, looking for the scholarly version of the JFK assassination story. I couldn’t find one dry tome: it was all except for Bugliosi, conspiracy theories. If I were a researcher looking for a definitive tome, it would be discouraging.

But you are right, the system is more complicated and more full of powers that are more likely to be rivals that cooperate with each other. And in the age of the internet and the tell-all, does anyone think that such a conspiracy would’nt leak out in some kind of way?

Also, one of the things that made me really suspect there was no real conspiracy was the nature of the assassin. Did Lee Harvey Oswald look like a person who would silently take the blame and not showboat? And cops had a chance to interrogate Lee Harvey before he was shot. Wouldn’t he have been killed beforehand or have killed himself first?
