I could not vote in Texas because the name on my driver’s license is different from the name on my passport.

Why does it matter if the license is expired? He wants to vote not drive.

The reasoning (with which I disagree) is that an expired license may be (and probably is) one that was issued before all the various proofs were required.

Yes, you are required to provide at least two sets of papers that each required an additional set of papers to obtain, all of which prove you are a citizen.

Puzzled because the law requires only one picture ID to be presented. So why did you have to show a passport and driver’s license. One would have sufficed?

I believe you are mistaken about having to provide two forms of ID. The law (Texas Senate Bill 14) requires only ONE form of picture ID when voting….the law allows for seven different types of ID that can be used. Also you are required to provide only one proof when registering to vote….a drivers license or state id or social security number.

Bank Of America has similar policy. If you DL is expired, it’s not proof it’s you. That’s just stupid. I think similar pressure should be brought to bear of the banks. How do you think those shady check cashing places get customers?

Banking is daily.

Voting is only every couple years or so.

Both instances are unnecessary harm. EDIT-Geez meant UN necessary from the start.

Five different items can be used, of which you only have to present one. After I quote that section of the law I’ll explain where the multiple document requirement occurs.

Sec. 63.0101. DOCUMENTATION OF PROOF OF IDENTIFICATION.
The following documentation is an acceptable form [as proof] of
photo identification under this chapter:
(1) a driver’s license, election identification
certificate, or personal identification card issued to the person
by the Department of Public Safety that has not expired or that
expired no earlier than 60 days before the date of presentation;
(2) a United States military identification card that
contains the person’s photograph that has not expired or that
expired no earlier than 60 days before the date of presentation;
(3) a United States citizenship certificate [papers]
issued to the person that contains the person’s photograph;
(4) a United States passport issued to the
person that has not expired or that expired no earlier than 60 days
before the date of presentation; or
(5) a license to carry a concealed handgun issued to
the person by the Department of Public Safety that has not expired
or that expired no earlier than 60 days before the date of
presentation

To attain a Texas Driver’s license you must provide documents that prove your identity, your social security number, your citizenship, and your Texas residency.

If your name is different on any of the documentation provided you must also provide documentation demonstrating why (change due to marriage, for example - and goo help you if you’re one of the victims of clerks misreading your name in prior documentation.)

Passport is a voluntary form of ID and as such requires a fee (minimum $55) plus you must provide your birth certificate and personal identification (oh look there’s that driver’s license again) and pictures.

Military ID requires being in the military. Naturalized citizenship documents require being a naturalized citizen; your birth certificate can’t be used for this (though it’s a secondary document for the texas driver’s license).

The Texas concealed handgun license requires:
Social security number, Valid driver license or identification card (appearing yet again), Current demographic, address, contact, and employment information, Residential and employment information for the last five years (new users only), Information regarding any psychiatric, drug, alcohol, or criminal history (new users only), Valid email address, and Valid credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express)

So yes, all you need to actually vote is one picture ID. You just had to jump through a number of complex hoops to get that ID.
