thecommodore,

I saw this story earlier. I even thought about posting it here, but I did so much on wingnuts recently, that I’m really glad you did it instead.

This was something that needs to be brought to our attention, especially since some people might end up supporting him, who wouldn’t otherwise.

This guy helped make the GOP platform last year. That tells you all you need to know about both him and the GOP.

I wonder if Barton has ever asked himself why only certain portions of the Bible were quoted “verbatim”? Technically doesn’t that mean we only have to obey those portions of the Bible that are quoted in the Constitution, and that we can basically ignore the rest of it? Doesn’t that fall a little short of his desired theocracy?

I don’t think any Bible verses are quoted “verbatim” in the Constitution. Barton is just making shit up, as usual.

I would like to add that while I’m not an expert like Barton with “source documents” in my possession, I have read the Federalist Papers, and while I saw referenced many examples from Greek, Roman and Anglo-Saxon history, and contemporary European Republics, I do not recall any mention of the Israelites or the Mosaic code. And according to Thomas Jefferson the idea that English common law came from the Bible is nonsense. As he points out in an essay which I sadly do not know how to link to - but I’m sure you can find it in any good book of his letters - the beginning of the English common law predated the introduction of Christianity into England.

You’re right. I was just playing Devil’s advocate - kind of fitting considering Barton would probably consider me a tool of the Devil.
