True dat.

Toronto resident here. I can confirm that voters in Toronto knew what kind of a person Rob Ford was, but they elected him mayor anyway.

A lot can happen between now and the next election in November 2014, but his “Ford Nation” still supports him uncritically.

By the way. Chris Christie is just a smarter, non-crack-smoking Rob Ford.

Admit it, since Calgary, that hot bed of red neckism, elected a Muslim mayor, people in Toronto went a little nuts and went a little too far to the crazy side.

I’ve heard some people surmise that Ford retains his popularity because he has a radio show. Might have something to do with the intensity,

He shows up frequently, or so I understand, on a local, big radio station. He doesn’t have his own show though.

Basically he promised to do away with ‘liberal stuff’ that would lower taxes by not contributing city money to the Pride parade, local arts festivals and things like that. Plus there was a garbage strike not long before the election and he’s always been against unions.

His schtick plays big at the outer edges of the city and that’s where the votes are.

Yeah, like the suburbs are the fountainhead of prosperity or something. It’s kind of amazing to hear this rhetoric in an era where North American cities are experiencing a upswing, but you can never underestimate the export of radical right values.
