Good article. Temujin is one of the least well known famous people of history.

Now I’m watching this interesting little video on the Mongols.

A fellow Lizard (unfortunately I can’t remember who) recommended this book on the subject. I read it and also recommend it.

But Ted Cruz is still to the Right of him, yes?

Ignoring that it was an empire like any other is exactly the point of the sculpted narrative of the Mongols.

The role Genghis Khan is assigned is not as a force of nature, but a racialized Other incapable of constructing “civilization” only of seizing it. He created an empire via conquest and death on a massive scale…and yet in historical narrative this is somehow worse than “civilizing forces” like Rome that did the same,

It’s all about setting up a false contrast, with lashings of racism, anti-nomad predjudice, and cultural imperialism.

I’m just reading J.F.C. Fuller’s The Decisive Battles of the Western World, specifically the battles involving Rome. Fuller makes it clear that much of the conflict that the Republic was involved in was actually slave hunts. They went to war against other people because they needed the cheap labor to works fields, mines and other grunt work.

As near as I can tell every empire has its feet standing in a large pool of blood.

Nah, I’d never picture Khal Drogo; Temujin wasn’t as hot :-)
