I’m not even remotely worried about these idiots anymore.

Religion, at least of the organized variety, is dying a sudden, quite rapid death in our culture, and it is happening right now. Of my four children, none of them attend church, nor do any of them ever talk about religion nor do they make it much of a part of their lives. It’s something they mostly do to appease their elders and it’s for show.

These guys are the wet ends of a dying movement. The more arrogantly and forcefully they assault people with their unwanted opinions, the faster they will be rejected and marginalized. The only thing these people have left is hate and bigotry and those are a major turn-off to kids these days.

Unlike BusyMonster, I am concerned about these types. They don’t need a majority to do vast amounts of damage to the nation. None of the deadliest regimes of the 20th century had majorities when they took power by various means. If they gain power then what the “kids” think of them will be irrelevant.

These are yet another reason why I believe every liberal should own and know how to use defensive firearms.

People who think they speak for God generally only speak for themselves, they just try to find passages from say the Bible or the Qur’an that already back up what they already believe. This is some rather scary stuff. A lot of people in the country unfortunately really do think this way.

You’re not at all worried about people like this? Well you should be. The religious right is still pretty powerful in this country. Even if they are losing and end up losing in the long run, their fortunes could turn around at any moment, especially if we get too complacent.

I’ve been watching the flyover country fundies for several years now, and I’m serious as a heart attack when I say “Be Afraid. Be very afraid.” These people are off their nut in a big, big way. They have isolated themselves, their children, are anti-government militia-bent, and they are absolutely righteous about their fucked up core beliefs. You wrap up that whole shittin’ mess in a flag and apple pie, and it might not seem so sinister, but I’m telling you - it is.

If we are going to evaluate the Dominionists, whether threat or not, we need real numbers. IIRC, they are small but growing rapidly at the expense of more mainstream religions. Note that Ted Cruz’ dad is one of their preachers, and Sarah Palin’s family moved into it from RC.

If we stay fat and happy as a nation, they will probably flicker out. If the economy tanks seriously, they will light a serious fire. Your culture and freedom depend on the JP Morgans of the world.

I’ve been aware of the 7 Mountain movement for quite a while and I’ve spoken to a number of people who either poo-poo it or start checking me for tin-foil hats.

I’ve seen them in action here in TN, they don’t always “Talk the Talk” in public, but the dog-whistles are more than clear. I’ve sometimes phrased a question to them in a way that suggests I’m part of their camp, and the responses are usually enough to confirm my suspicions. I suspect that they are going to go for a lot of smaller positions, school boards, planning commissions, city and county govt. and from there build into higher levels of power.

I see this as a very real threat. These folks are well organized, they have a lot of money behind them, and since they view themselves almost as “Christian soldiers behind enemy lines”, they do a good job of not drawing attention to themselves.

I think that this is a very real threat.

Frederick Clarkson at Talk to Action have done a job tracking the growth of the Dominionist movement. He notes that those in the movement actively try to convince others there is no such thing as Dominionism. One of his latest articles is worth reading. talk2action.org

The various groups with somewhat different doctrines make it hard to define and measure them precisely. The Colorado church that brings us “Jesus Camp”, and the Joel’s Army movement is in there, and they are way too large to be ignored. Dominionism is more an ideology than a hierarchy, with a good bit of internal strife and shunnings.

That bolded part describes the entire history of Christianity since the year 33. One split after another, all in the name of doctrinal purity.

These guys, the Dominionists, are attempting to reverse the “fall” wherein we humans, like god, became to know “both good and evil.” But in order to forsake “evil” you have to forsake knowledge. Subsequently Dominionists demand total capitulation to a state of virtual stupidity. Unfortunately there will be many who, afraid of indeterminate complexity, will fall for the Dominionist’s serpent’s tongue wagging.
