Between c0nc0rdance, QualiaSoup, and TheraminTrees, that’s like a trifecta of highly informative and articulate pro-science YouTubers.

I thought I was going to have enough time to watch this now, but I’ve suddenly found myself without that time, so forgive me if what I say was mentioned in the video. I’ll just copy/paste my initial defense against the existence of “race” (I may make a video incorporating this information as well).

Statement by the U.S. Department of Energy - Office of Science and Office of Biological and Environmental Research, and the Human Genome Project (nowpublic.com

DNA studies do not indicate that separate classifiable subspecies (races) exist within modern humans. While different genes for physical traits such as skin and hair color can be identified between individuals, no consistent patterns of genes across the human genome exist to distinguish one race from another. There also is no genetic basis for divisions of human ethnicity. People who have lived in the same geographic region for many generations may have some alleles in common, but no allele will be found in all members of one population and in no members of any other.

Statement by the American Association of Physical Anthropologists (physanth.org

Pure races, in the sense of genetically homogenous populations, do not exist in the human species today, nor is there any evidence that they have ever existed in the past.

There is no necessary concordance between biological characteristics and culturally defined groups. On every continent, there are diverse populations that differ in language, economy, and culture. There is no national, religious, linguistic or cultural group or economic class that constitutes a race.

Statement by the American Anthropological Association (aaanet.org

Given what we know about the capacity of normal humans to achieve and function within any culture, we conclude that present-day inequalities between so-called “racial” groups are not consequences of their biological inheritance but products of historical and contemporary social, economic, educational, and political circumstances.

Given all of this, I don’t understand where any dissenting opinion comes from. I keep up with C0n’s videos, and I agree with the other commenters. He is very knowledgeable, and he does his homework. If only younger people with scientific knowledge gained notice more often in these fields. Maybe then we could drop the value of IQ as well as race.

re: #7 SamOwl

Thanks. I think a lot of it was mentioned here. But its just as well that you posted your comment now even if you couldn’t watch the videos yet. I’m sure when the thread will go into archive. When that happens, people won’t be able to post comments anymore.

re: #7 SamOwl

by the way, sorry to have to mention this, but your last three links appear to not work. The last Two them of them say that the page no longer exist. The one about the US department of energy takes me to the wrong page.

re: #9 CriticalDragon1177

Ah, thank you for pointing that out. It’s an issue with the html code (I put the links in parentheses). Here they are again:

aaanet.org

physanth.org

nowpublic.com

If it were to occur again, just do a search on Google for portions of the quotes. They should come up.

re: #10 SamOwl

you’re welcome. I saw that statement on “race” from the American Anthropological Association by the way. They do a great job arguing their point.

12 SamOwl  Fri, Nov 15, 2013 5:47:31pm

Just finished watching C0n’s video. He has once again completely astonished me in terms of how comprehensive he’s made such a complicated subject. His voice makes it very easy to listen to what he’s saying as well.

There are a few things I noticed. When he addressed the race-IQ relationship, he didn’t just stop at saying “correlation doesn’t equal causation”, which is what I did. He explained very succinctly how it applies, and why the correlation doesn’t prove anything. In this I especially enjoyed his explanation of how groups are imagined and arbitrary, and how dividing any group based on a certain characteristic will produce differences.

I’ll have to take notes on what he said in regards to racial medicine, because that’s something I’ve been looking for for such a long time, and I feel like he addressed it so well.

Most importantly, however, he took a genuine side that was entirely based in science. I and mostly anybody else would let emotion cloud reasoning, but it doesn’t seem to be the case with C0n. What’s even more significant is that while taking a completely objective view in science, he still proposed a “best resolution” to the issue of race differences.

Absolutely amazing.
