Can anyone tell me what they think is wrong with the act or the concept?

I don’t know if I’d find fault with the act, but I can find fault with the analogy between ‘online’ and ‘offline’ privacy.

When you’re ‘offline’, and you throw something in the garbage and take it out of your house, nobody needs a warrant or a subpoena to look at it. Isn’t putting something on the internet more like that than it is like having it in a drawer in your house?

For those documents we care about, we shred. Or burn. Gone forever. No more public access.

Anyway yes, I’d agree it’s a rough analogy, but not so much as to undermine the central issue. Without probable cause, or a connection to a real rather than potential investigation….

Sigh, the difference personal data, and metadata. People really do need to learn the differences and why metadata requires only a subpoena.

‘Scuse me? Even that should require a warrant to gather. Because unless they have enough evidence to get a warrant from a judge, it’s not data they are allowed to gather. There is no good legal justification for gathering data that is not related to a particular investigation.
