A truly brilliant decision by China. I don’t foresee any way that this could possibly go wrong. /sarc

1. The Japanese are not happy.

2. Here is a map of the “defense zone”. Here is a map of Japan. I don’t know the status of international law and Sino-Japanese treaties, but it looks like incorporating the disputing islands is not the only issue: the defense zone is close to territory that is unambiguously Japanese: IMHO parts are closer, in part, than they are to China.

China is once again testing its version of manifest destiny. There is somewhat of a cold war going on between China and Japan, especially regarding the disputed Diao Wu islands and fishing rights. Other neighbors, including the Philippines and Vietnam, have also run into Chinese expansionism and jingoism. Here’s a recent example. A while ago, some hostages, including Chinese tourists, were taken by a Philippine militia group. In the ensuing “rescue,” some of the hostages were killed or injured, including Chinese tourists. Now, some Chinese are pissed off at the Philippines to the extent that they did not want China to donate relief supplies and funds for the damage caused by Typhoon Haiyan. This attitude partly explains why China’s initial offer of relief was so paltry.

To make an analogy to the American theater, China is to the smaller countries of Asia as the USA was (and still is) to most of Latin America, but much less trustworthy.
