Conservatives still don’t understand that the arts are forever denied to them.

The reason is, generally speaking, conservative people are not creative, or open to new ideas (required to be creative) or willing to take the kinds of personal risks to one’s ego that are required to make really interesting art.

The general feeling I get from such folk regarding the arts is that what I do (as a writer and musician) is practically magic, and that it’s scary to do something that isn’t a direct echo of What Has Come Before, All Praise Established Canon.

Doing something genuinely new entails a risk of rejection that an artist has to be liberal enough to recognize is just the nature of the game. Santorum’s pathetic effort is just the latest in a long line of unchallenging pablum that conservatives trade amongst themselves as “culture” which has zero appeal outside of its function as a shibboleth for “good” right-wingers. Real art criticizes, challenges, and synthesizes. Conservative “art” reinforces already well-defined social mores and attitudes, which to any story, song, or other work of art is death, because it’s something everyone already knows. People like Santorum and his followers don’t go to the movies to be enlightened, they go to be re-brainwashed.

It is hilarious though to see how many times these boring, thoughtless, mediocre intellects think that by slathering on some money they can take lifeless, dead ideas and re-animate them. I don’t care how much you spend on the CGI or whatever, a shitty story with no point is a shitty story with no point.

See also, the Half-Hour News Hour (where Fox News proved that conservatives aren’t funny) and Glenn Beck’s Christmas Sweater. Also, Battlefield Earth (one of the worst science fiction novels of all time, I refused to go see the movie), and so on. Anytime someone is more interested in their dogma than their story, it’s going to be a complete bore-fest. I also class lame things like the Veggie Tales with this.

It’s all a piece of a class of people who increasingly seem to be looking over at the real performers and movers in the world, and desperately wishing they could do it too, and thinking that going through the motions will get them there.

I heard it has Sylvester McCoy in it, but I don’t feel like looking this up. Can anyone confirm or disconfirm this rumor for me?

Those were the good old days where horrible movies would go to die. Now it will appear on Netflix, Amazon Prime, and a couple of pay movie channels.

The essence of conservatism is attachment to the status quo.

The essence of art is non-attachment to the status quo.

Big shock that ne’er the twain shall meet.

I finally checked and it looks like Sylvester McCoy is not only in this film, but has a large part. I must say I’m disappointed in him. Did he already burn through his Hobbit money, or is the acting bug so strong in him he’ll do absolutely anything, no matter how tawdry, to sate it?
