1 People For The Ethical Treatment Of Sarah Palin  Wed, Nov 27, 2013 1:18:15pm

My god, these people are so insular, they think it is 1850.

Good lord. Derbyshire tries to refute 12 Years a Slave -which is a true story - by quoting from Gone With the Wind - which is fiction.

I guess Mr Derbyshire is also unfamiliar with the fact that Solomon Northup was born free, then kidnapped and placed into slavery…

…which was not a singular event, but a an ongoing criminal enterprise. As was the kidnapping of free black children.

I wouldn’t go that far, otherwise when he was down south he’d be asking people where the slave auctions were, not to mention he’d wonder what these new Automobile things were.

I know, talk about dumb. While there maybe some parts of the movie that are fiction, for the most part its a true story, while in gone with the wind, I don’t even think any of the characters were based on real people at all.

Legend is Scarlett was loosely based off of Theodore Roosevelt’s mother but unlike this, that story is clearly a work of fiction. Mr. Northup’s story is a memoir. This is really pathetic though and shows you how fucked up the right is if they have people on their side like Derbyshire who complain about a movie being too anti-slavery.

Many Englishmen were pro-Confederate during the American Civil War. Apparently, at least one Englishman still is.

That’s right: it’s totally because he’s English.

It would be way more stereotypical if he was a Southerner. Off course I know a couple Southerners and neither of them are racists or slavery apologists like Derbyshire.

Derbyshire and others like him are very afraid of the demographic changes blowing in the wind. They seem to think that when Caucasians are the minority, we POC will treat them the same way some of them have treated us. If only eh knew that it’s a subject that never has come up in any conversation I’ve had with any other Black American in all of my 60 years. I think they’re more pre-occupied with the changing demographics than we are. Also, even when POC become the majority, it doesn’t mean that we’ll have the economic and political power to tilt the scales in our favor. We would have to gain a whole lot of ground in less than 40 years, and I just don’t see it happening. People like Derbyshire have a long way to go and a lot of soul-searching to do. POC want the same things now we’ve wanted all along—to be recognized as full U.S. citizens and to be given the same chance to succeed as others in this society. We don’t want a handout, we only want earned respect, equal status and equal opportunity, like Derbyshire enjoys. These will be hard goals to achieve as long as there are people like Derbyshire around.

I recently got a membership renewal notice from the Southern Poverty Law Center, and one of the reasons they sited as to why they needed money was as they put it “fight the remnants of Jim crow racism.” I think that’s a pretty good reason to give them money. Unfortunately I don’t think any of us here will live to see the day when no one out there thinks like Derbyshire. Even a hundred years from now, there will probably still be some racists in this country. I would be surprised otherwise. Its not going to die out easily. I’d give it a least a few centuries before it completely disappears.
