‘Zactly. Apple only has itself to compete with on the OS. Android actually works well on a big array of phones from various companies. if we totaled up all the smartphones on Android as one phone would Apple still rule? I dunno but I doubt it.

From the article:

Apple’s smartphone market share climbed to 12% mark in China in October, instantly making it the 3rd largest smartphone player in the market up from a modest 3% share in September.

Controlling the hardware and software gives Apple benefits, especially in terms of sales though the App store and overall user experience. Google is viewing Samsung more and more as an adversary, and internally there’s noise that they’ve come to regret their marketing strategy with Android, as Samsung has grown fat off it and is running away with the majority of profits from the operating system. Samsung is diverting much of the App store revenue, especially in China, and has such a dominant share of the market that it’s where Google is looking to snag market share from, not Apple which has grown 4x in the past year but has few kinks in their armor. Google can’t just suddenly start charging Samsung more without opening up themselves to all kinds of anti-trust actions, a position Apple never put itself in by never licensing its software to external venders to begin with. In a very real sense Google created its own Golem and now has to figure out what to do about it.

The solution? Google is making devices now and will soon be bringing quite a few of them to market -> Glass, the Watch, other possible wearables in the near future, and hopes to use Android, but not necessarily Samsung as the central server for the entire user experience as Google markets its own tablets and phones and will grow more and more as a hardware company.
