“We’re paratroopers, Lieutenant. We’re supposed to be surrounded.”
- Major Dick Winters
5th Armored Captain “Hey, Paratroop, we’re here to save you!”
507th PIR Corporal “Saving us? We got ‘em where we want ‘em! We did save some for ya, though.”
I never met my FiL’s brother but he was in the Army up in the northern part of the bulge. An Alabama native he didn’t have appropriate winter uniform (because of Bradley’s & other generals arrogant belief they’d be done by then) and, unlike northerners with family who knew winter, no one to send him gear. He never forgave the Army for being that cold for no good reason.
He also had a tale of hiding in a ditch while watching SS troops march past, close enough to the hobnail boots that he could have touched them.
I think it’s time to go set up my copy of Bitter Woods boardgamegeek.com and play that tonight with my son.
